The WA Citizenship Strategy 2004 – 2009 asserts that a healthy democracy requires the participation of informed and active citizens in shaping the nature of society and identifies a number of strategies and actions to support active citizenship in WA.
Active citizenship is:

• Understanding and becoming involved in the systems and processes of government;
• Knowing and being confident about our rights and responsibilities within our society;
• Ensuring there are opportunities and mechanisms for all to participate in public life and decision-making, regardless of age, ability, culture, lifestyle or location.
