Settlement services and immigration

The Commonwealth Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) is responsible for delivering a diverse range of services and policies relating to areas such as Australia’s annual Migration and Humanitarian Programs, multicultural and Indigenous affairs, visa applications, citizenship and settlement of newly arrived migrants.

The organisations listed below have been funded by DIAC to provide settlement services.

Humanitarian Settlement Services

The Humanitarian Settlement Strategy (IHSS) program,  helps humanitarian entrants rebuild their lives in Australia by providing them with support to meet their initial settlement needs. The aim of the HSS is to help humanitarian entrants achieve self-sufficiency as soon as possible in the settlement process and to provide them with settlement services that meet their particular circumstances. The following agencies receive funding from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to provide settlement support.

Immigration

DIAC is responsible for planning and administering Australia’s annual migrant intake, visa applications, provision of settlement services, citizenship and entry of long term temporary residents, students and visitors.

Settlement service providers – metropolitan

The Settlement Grants Program (SGP), administered by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), provides funding for not-for-profit community organisations and local government bodies. These organisations receive funding for workers who are able to deliver settlement information, case work and referral services for individuals by matching them with services that meet their individual needs. Priority client groups for SGP funding are refugee and humanitarian entrants, migrants living in rural and regional areas, small and emerging migrant communities and migrant groups with additional settlement needs. The following agencies currently receive SGP funding.

A full list of recipients is available at the DIAC website www.immi.gov.au.
