Proud Western Australian Thurka Sitparan says her journey as a refugee has shaped who she is and strengthened her commitment to supporting others facing adversity.
The 2025 City of Canning Cultural Ambassador is also a volunteer for several organisations spanning refugee health, multicultural, environmental, and seniors’ groups.
This is in addition to her professional work as a Family Practice Manager with a focus on improving healthcare access to vulnerable populations.
Born and raised in Sri Lanka during the civil war, Thurka says her family experienced displacement, uncertainty and loss.
She says after losing her father during the war, she sought safety and the opportunity to build a future in Australia.
“Arriving in Western Australia was both exciting and challenging. I had to adapt to a new culture, language, and way of life while rebuilding from the trauma of conflict,” she says.
“Many people see the moment a refugee arrives in Australia as the end of the journey, but in reality, it is often the beginning of a new set of challenges.
“Refugees are not only adapting to a new country; they are often rebuilding their lives while carrying memories of loss, separation, and trauma.”
Thurka highlights kindness, curiosity and respect as key to creating inclusive communities for people from refugee backgrounds.
“Taking the time to listen to people's stories, learning about different cultures, and being welcoming can make a significant difference,” she says.
“Inclusion is also about creating opportunities—whether through employment, education, volunteering, community events, or simply inviting someone to participate and feel that they belong.
“Small acts of connection can help people feel valued and accepted.”
Thurka believes that Western Australia is strengthened by its cultural diversity.
“When we embrace people from culturally diverse backgrounds and create spaces where everyone feels welcome, we build stronger, more compassionate communities for everyone,” she says.
Refugee Week runs from Sunday 14 June to Saturday 20 June 2026 and celebrates the contributions, courage and resilience of Australians from refugee backgrounds.
